How to Protect your Rug from the Sun

As we welcome the summer and the wonderful rays of the sun, we should also be prepared for the effects that it can do to our precious rugs. Sun fading on a rug is not impossible to correct, but is very difficult. In this case, there is only prevention, and a costly cure. When you purchase a new rug or when you’re placing a rug in your home, you should also be aware of how the light from your windows can affect the rug. Be particular about skylights as well. You can also try to observe how the light falls and streams through you window at different times during the day.

When a rug fades unevenly, the color is impossible to even out. Keep your rug out of direct sunlight, if possible. The rays of the sun damage by causing the rug to fade where the light hits it. Consider window tints that can block out most of the sun’s harmful rays.

Antique rugs that were made with natural substances are especially susceptible to sun fading. Chemically washed rugs will still show some fading over time as well. Rug areas that are under direct sunlight will fade and look uneven compared to the other parts of the rug.

So what can you do to prevent your rug from fading? Frequently rotate your rug especially when it’s under direct sunlight. Or rotate it at least once a month. The rug will tend to fade but the color will at least be uniform. If the rug is not under direct sunlight, you can rotate it four times in a year or every season. If your valuable rug is inside a rarely used room, you can close the curtains and preserve the original colors. Choosing a Perfect Eco Friendly Rug

Rugs are the most important part of the interior décor of your room. They are a great way to add personality and color to any room. There are environmental concerns associated with rugs and their creation, as discussed in the previous post, because of these concerns eco-friendly rugs are now available. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind while choosing a perfect eco-friendly rug for your room.

1.Buy rugs which are made from natural fibers. Resource-intensive products such as petroleum by-products should be avoided. The backing should also be made from natural fibers, and environment friendly adhesives.

2.Check out the chemicals with which the rug has been treated. The chemicals which are used to treat rugs to make them stain resistant and more durable also cause environmental damage. The less chemicals the rug is treated with, the more eco-friendly it is.

3.Look for the recycle logo; choose companies which recycle old rugs to manufacture new ones but keeping chemical treatment in consideration. Rugs which are recycled are also helpful for a clean environment.

4.Never compromise with design and décor of your room. Find an eco-friendly rug which fits your room the best, that’s where Rugsale.com comes in with a vast variety of eco-friendly rugs.

Area Rug Styles

When faced with choosing an area rug, the sheer range of different styles available can feel unapproachable, especially if you don’t know an oriental rug from a contemporary rug.
Listed below are the most common rug styles you’ll find at your local rug store and a few important details on each one:

Contemporary area rugs
Contemporary area rugs are fantastic work of arts and have vibrant colors featuring a diverse range of patterns, which you probably won’t find on other styles of area rugs. They’re usually associated with patterns no older than 25 years old. Contemporary style rugs comes in a huge range of colors, textures and patters and are best if you’re looking for a modern style of rug. Contemporary area rugs can be used in all rooms but are especially ideal for smaller rooms as they can give a more brighter and spacious looks due to their bolder designs.

Persian area rugs
Persian area rugs consist of bright colors and complex designs which when combined form a marvelous work of art. Made from wool, cotton or silk, they’re much more durable than synthetic rugs. Most Persian rugs are red or blue based but of course have additional colors added. This style of rug is found in 3 forms; geometric, floral and pictorial. The Persian area rug is one of the oldest types of rugs aging back to a time when they were solely used to cover cold flooring - however it didn’t’ take long for the immense beauty of the Persian rug to be known as work of art. Persian rugs are a sign of wealth and happiness and are known for being high in quality, and they’re just some of the reasons this rug style is highly sought after.

Oriental area rugs
Oriental area rugs are usually made from wool or silk and come from any part of Asia, however China and Japan are the main producers. Oriental area rugs feature captivating designs and are usually based on oriental traditions. Earthy colors like white, peach, yellow and blue are the major colors used with this style. The popularity of the Oriental rug has soared in the western world, with designs featuring dragons an admired style. Authentic oriental rugs are of very high quality and are treated with more respect than other types.

Braided area rugs
The braided rug is extremely durable and is formed by braiding strips of heavy wool together. Often found in oval shapes, it’s not uncommon to now find them in other shapes such as rectangles, squares or even circles. Traditional braided rugs are hand made and come in more toned colors, but modern styles are usually machine made and feature bolder colors. Braided rugs can add elegance to any room and the smaller sized rugs are great in complementing other styles of rugs. Braided area rugs came into fruition during the American native era and during the early 1900’s rug braiding became an art form. Braided rug kits can still be found today but this pastime is nowhere near as popular as it was decades ago.

Brick and Mortar Stores Tighten Return Policies

Many retail store are tightening their return policies because of theft and fraud. Here is a story from CBS News.

LaRocca sees thousands of return fraud cases every year, and many are caught on tape. In one example, a woman tried to return an area rug at a department store. The clerk didn't realize that minutes earlier, security cameras caught her stealing the same rug right off the shelf. The woman disappeared as soon as she got her refund. CBS News

This is costing shoppers at brick and mortar retail stores more money.

"You and I as consumers are paying a little extra at the register, almost a hidden crime tax, to cover those losses committed by people stealing merchandise and taking advantage of retail return policies," LaRocca said. CBS News

Because of the nature of our business this can’t happen to us and you will never pay a “hidden crime tax” for area rugs with us.
